Answer: Miracle on the Hudson
"Sully" (2016), called "Sully, Miracle on the Hudson" in the UK has Tom Hanks playing Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger, a real-life hero who was a US Airways pilot who, in 2009, had to ditch his A320 airliner in the Hudson River shortly after takeoff due to bird strike taking out both engines of the plane. All 155 passengers and crew were saved.
The movie covers the ditching and the subsequent investigation. The movie was directed by Clint Eastwood (His first with Mr Hanks but his third with Laura Linney who plays Sully's wife in the movie). Mr Hanks, who has made a career out of playing ordinary men who became heroes, said the most difficult part of playing the role was having his hair coloured white to match the real Sully's hair colour. Mr Hanks and Mr Sullenberger spent a lot of time together to enable the actor to play the pilot. The real life Sully was impressed with Mr Hanks' portrayal of himself and the two have remained friends.

Answer: 1984
Tom Hanks' movie "Splash" was released in 1984. This romantic comedy film tells the story of a man who falls in love with a mermaid. Interestingly, "Splash" was not only a critical and commercial success, but it also marked the beginning of Tom Hanks' rise to stardom. His charming performance in the film showcased his talent and likability, leading to a string of successful roles in the years to come. "Splash" also holds the distinction of being the first film released by Touchstone Pictures, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, which was created to produce more adult-oriented films.
From Quiz: Actors: Tom Hanks and his Movies
Answer: Astronaut
Tom Hanks has always had a deep interest in space exploration so when a script was being passed around in 1994 based on Astronaut Jim Lovell's book ("Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13") about a fateful trip to the moon in 1970, Tom Hanks jumped at the chance to play a role and was thrilled to be given the plumb role of Apollo 13 module commander, Jim Lovell.
This was a gripping movie filled with tension (despite all of us knowing how it ended) made better with a well crafted acting ensemble which included, Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Ed Harris. Nominated for seven Oscars, winning two, Mr Hanks was not nominated for Best Actor, (he won the previous two years) which might have been unfair anyway as this was an ensemble movie and all the leads played very, very well.
